Last year I began teaching the 8th and 9th Art Elective group (which are the oldest kids in the school I teach at). This was a great challenge because the way this Art class is taught is obviously very different from my other classes. I wanted to plan projects and assignments which would be appealing and challenging for them. Though we started the year learning and talking about artists like Dalí, Picasso, Magritte and Kahlo, I also wanted my students to have a chance to appreciate work by artists of today. In my search for artwork that could be used as inspiration for a 3D project (I usually plan for at least one each semester-with all my grades), I came across a wonderful artist that makes paper maché sculptures in a style that I thought would appeal to my students. Her name is Juliana Bollini and she is a visual artist living in Brazil. She is absolutely amazing at making paper maché artwork. Visit the following links to view some of her wonderful work! Amazing!

This school year ended with an amazing student Art Show (once again). I am excited for next year and the great things the kids will come up with. I have only a few days left of summer vacation before starting with professional development courses, which means I have to begin with the long range planning for all the grades I will be having next year!
For me, this means not only selecting the projects that will help me fulfill curriculum requirements, but organizing them in a sequence that makes sense for students. I rarely repeat projects, except for the ones that I feel my students enjoyed and learned from most. This means a lot more work, but it is worth it! Cheers! I really enjoy mixed media and multimedia artwork. I began experimenting with collaging when I was very young and found the process of cutting and pasting separate images and words (at times entire articles) into one same cardboard or journal page very therapeutic. I was creating art journals without even setting out to. This is why, perhaps, I love admiring this type of artwork today.
Waldemar Strempler is a German artist, sculptor and graphic designer that frequently uses elements of the human form as part of his compositions. Ohara Hale is a multitalented artist with a very fun, whimsical style. Her work includes fine art, illustration, animation, and graphic design. I love the way she is able to integrate illustrations into logos!
