Hello. Today I found a site called Try Helvetica (you can find the link below). This site features pictures of little establishments, cars and signs in Brazil with unimpressive font uses and replaces them all with fonts from the Helvetica family. After having seen a bunch of the images posted on the site, I concluded that the use of Helvetica would indeed improve the general appearance of the places/things.
However, every font has its time and place and, for some reason, it seems every time is Helvetica time these days. I mean yes, Helvetica is a nice, clean, neutral, legible option and it is the safest way to go if you don´t want to take risks with different fonts. To me, it seems like its use (together with a good dose of minimalist design) is a sure fire way to make your image hip and in with the ¨in¨ crowd.
In my opinion, Helvetica is a good font that has been overused for some time now and continues to be overused. It is not any better than many other sans serif fonts which are being ignored in order to use what is most popular. I invite fellow designers to explore other alternatives and not be afraid to include fonts that are different.
